What is Exercise Therapy/Functional Movement?

Functional Movement is the name given to the movement patterns created as you go through your daily activities. In other words, as we grow and learn to crawl, walk, run, bend and reach our bodies develop movement patterns to guide each movement. This process is designed to make performing everyday actions easier and more efficient for your brain and body.  We’ve all heard the phrase “Muscle Memory”, most often referenced by riding a bike. It’s something you don’t have to think about, you just do it.

Why is Functional Movement Important?

As we age we encounter things like growth spurts, injuries, and structural changes which change the way your body uses its muscles and joints. All of those changing conditions require that the body also change its movement patterns. Unfortunately, more often than not, these new movement patterns do their job of getting the action done, but they also compromise the health of the joint due to those untreated injuries and structural changes. 

At GreenLife Wellness we understand that treating pain successfully also means preventing it from returning. We incorporate Functional Movement into our treatment plans to re-educate and strengthen your body. This helps to support the progress made through chiropractic care and prevent poor movement patterns from reinjuring the affected areas.

Functional Movement FAQs

Is it okay to get a chiropractic adjustment before a functional movement session?
Yes! The goal of chiropractic adjustments is to enhance the alignment and mobility of the spine. Performing the exercises you would be assigned in a functional movement session will simply keep the spine moving in safe ways for about 30 minutes after your adjustment.
What is the difference between functional movement and physical therapy?
While both services are necessary at certain times, physical therapy is typically used to rehabilitate a single component of the body (shoulder, knee, wrist, etc). Functional movement, on the other hand, is designed to look at how the body moves and communicates as a whole. Our goal is to improve general function by working on strengthening and stretching multiple areas at once.
How often should I schedule functional movement sessions?
Consistency is key when it comes to increasing mobility and strength. After your initial functional movement assessment, you will receive a frequency recommendation from us, but in general, we like to see you at least once a week to be able to monitor your progress and make sure your body is responding well to your assigned exercises.
